Efficiency and Heat Dissipation in 48V Power Architecture For Data Centers

The transition to 48V Power Architecture For Data Centers is driven by the physics of "Ohm’s Law" ($P = I^2R$). By increasing the voltage from traditional 12V to 48V, the current ($I$) required to deliver the same power is reduced by a factor of four. Because power loss is proportional to the square of the current, a 48V system reduces distribution losses by approximately 16 times.

This architecture utilizes Bus Bars and "Point-of-Load" (PoL) converters. At the rack level, 48V is stepped down to the sub-1V levels required by modern CPUs and GPUs using Gallium Nitride (GaN) transistors. These components allow for higher switching frequencies and smaller footprints, significantly improving the "Power Usage Effectiveness" (PUE) of the data center by reducing the heat generated by the power delivery network itself.
